Our expert guide to building a fragrance wardrobe, understanding the perfume strength chart, and finding the winter perfumes worth adding to your collection this season.
You wouldn’t wear a single dress for every occasion. You wouldn’t wear the same coat to work and to a candlelit dinner. Fragrance shouldn’t be any different. This is the idea behind fragrance wardrobing, one of the loveliest concepts in modern perfume ownership, and the reason our fragrance team is such a big believer in owning more than one signature scent.
Below, our fragrance experts have pulled together the complete guide to building your own fragrance wardrobe. What it is, why it matters, how to read the fragrance strength chart to pick the right concentration for each moment, and the winter fragrances worth building your cold-weather rotation around. Everything below is part of our My Fragrance, My Way membership campaign, and every wardrobing tip works even better once you’re a MyTFS member.

Fragrance wardrobing is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of owning one bottle you wear for everything, you build a small edit of fragrances that between them cover the different moments in your life. Morning versus evening. Weekday versus weekend. Summer versus winter. Work coffee versus dinner date.
The idea is to match your scent to your mood, your outfit and your occasion, in exactly the way you’d match everything else in your wardrobe. Someone with a proper fragrance wardrobe never wonders what to spray in the morning. They just reach for the bottle that fits the day.
A good starting wardrobe is smaller than most people think. Three or four fragrances is enough. One for daytime, one for evening, one for something special, and one seasonal specialist that gets pulled out when the weather turns. That last one is where winter perfumes tend to live.

One of the most useful things any wardrobe builder can learn is how to read a perfume strength chart. Because concentration decides how long a fragrance lasts on your skin, how much it projects, and where it’s best worn. Building a wardrobe that combines the right different strengths of perfume for the right moments is one of the marks of a genuinely considered collection.
Here’s our fragrance experts’ full fragrance strength chart, from lightest to strongest.
1-3% fragrance oil. Lasts around two hours. Very light, sits close to the skin. Perfect for gym bags, post-shower and hot summer days. Rarely a wardrobe cornerstone, but a lovely refresh option.
3-5% fragrance oil. Lasts two to four hours. Traditionally citrus-forward and splashable. Historically the lightest formal fragrance format, and still a beautiful choice for warm-weather daytime wear.
5-15% fragrance oil. Lasts four to six hours. The most versatile fragrance strength. EDTs project pleasantly without overwhelming, and they suit daytime, office and warm-weather wear. Most classic men’s fragrances live here.
15-20% fragrance oil. Lasts six to eight hours. The workhorse of a modern fragrance wardrobe. Enough projection to be noticed, enough longevity to last through a day into an evening. Most modern women’s fragrances launch at EDP strength.
20-30% fragrance oil. Lasts eight to twelve hours or more. The richest concentration, applied sparingly to pulse points. Parfum strength fragrances are where winter perfumes and evening scents tend to live, because the higher concentration gives them the warmth and staying power that cold-weather wear demands.
For a deeper walk-through on how EDT and EDP differ specifically, our guide to Eau de Toilette vs Eau de Parfumexplains it beautifully.
Our fragrance team’s suggested starting shape for a proper wardrobe. Four fragrances, each doing a specific job.
The everyday signature. Usually an Eau de Parfum. Wearable, universally flattering, appropriate for work, coffee dates and everyday errands. This is the fragrance you reach for on autopilot.
The evening scent. Something warmer, richer or slightly more sensual. Often an EDP or a Parfum. Comes out for dinners, drinks and events.
The seasonal specialist. The one that only gets worn at specific times of year. Fresh summer scents live here, and so do winter perfumes with amber, oud or vanilla in the base.

Winter fragrance is a category all of its own. Cold weather actually holds fragrance closer to the skin, and the notes that suit the season tend to be warmer, richer and heavier than the fresh citrus or aquatic scents that dominate spring and summer. This is where amber, tobacco, oud, vanilla, incense and warm woody notes really come into their own.
Our fragrance team’s favourite winter perfumes tend to sit at Parfum strength or Eau de Parfum strength for that extra warmth and longevity. Anything lighter can struggle to project in the cold.
Burberry Goddess Intense Eau de Parfum (shop here) is one of our team’s most-recommended winter scents for her. A warm, ambery vanilla with the kind of sensual depth that comes into its own the moment the temperature drops.
Tom Ford Ombre Leather Parfum (shop here) is our team’s luxury winter perfume for him or her. Cardamom, jasmine, leather, patchouli, amber and moss. Rich, sophisticated, made for candlelit rooms and cold nights.
Sabrina Carpenter Caramel Dream Body Mist (shop here) is the accessible winter scent for a younger wardrobe. Sweet, gourmand, cosy and beautifully affordable.
Whatever winter scents you build into your collection, this is the season to embrace the richer concentrations. Parfum strength fragrances feel positively luxurious in cold weather.

Price Promise. Find it cheaper elsewhere, get the credit back. This one matters when you’re building a wardrobe of luxury Parfum-strength fragrances that don’t come cheap.
It’s why we’ve framed this whole campaign around My Fragrance, My Way. Because fragrance really is personal, and a proper wardrobe should feel like it was built for the person wearing it.
Layering your wardrobe
The final trick to a proper fragrance wardrobe is knowing you don’t have to wear one bottle at a time. Layering fragrance from your wardrobe means you can build combinations that no one else in the room is wearing. A warm winter scent as a base, a lighter EDT on top. A body mist all over, a Parfum strength scent at the pulse points. The possibilities open up beautifully once you have three or four bottles to combine.
Layer heavy to light, keep families related (florals with florals, gourmands with gourmands), and apply to different pulse points rather than mixing directly on the skin. Once you know these three rules, your fragrance wardrobe effectively doubles.
Final word
A fragrance wardrobe isn’t a luxury. It’s the natural way to think about fragrance once you realise a single bottle was never going to cover every moment of your life. Start with an everyday signature, add an evening scent, invest in one seasonal specialist for winter, and grow from there. Learning the fragrance strength chart along the way means every bottle earns its place for the right reasons.
And with MyTFS behind you, every bottle costs a little less, every wardrobe grows a little faster, and every new launch lands in your world before it lands anywhere else. That’s what My Fragrance, My Way is all about.
