Our fragrance experts’ guide to buying fragrance as a student. Everything you need to know about Eau de Toilette vs Eau de Parfum, how to build your first proper wardrobe, and how to get 15% off on your first bottle.
There’s a specific moment in most people’s fragrance journey that happens in your late teens or early twenties. You go from spraying whatever’s in the bathroom cupboard to actively wanting something that’s yours. Something that makes you feel more like the person you’re becoming. Uni is usually where that happens. Freshers, first flatmates, first proper nights out, first dates you actually care about. It’s the moment fragrance starts to matter.
Below, our fragrance experts have put together the complete student scent guide. What to know before you buy your first bottle, how to read a fragrance label properly, how to build your first wardrobe on a student budget, and how to save 15% every time you shop with our student discount.

Before we get into the guide, the practical bit. Every student in the UK gets 15% off at The Fragrance Shop, forever. Not a one-off. Not just in freshers week. Every purchase you make while you’re a student comes with the discount already applied.
This matters because it’s not just for lipstick fragrance or cheap body sprays. It’s 15% off everything, including the designer names you’re actually excited about. A Chanel, a Marc Jacobs, a Boss, a Sabrina Carpenter launch. All of it.
Sign up through our student discount page and the 15% is yours for the whole time you’re studying. You’ll thank yourself every time you buy a bottle.
Now, the guide.
If there’s one thing worth learning early in your fragrance journey, it’s how to read a label properly. The words Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum and Parfum tell you exactly how a fragrance will behave on your skin, and understanding the difference between Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum is the single most useful piece of fragrance knowledge you can carry into your first shopping trip.
The difference between Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette comes down to concentration. It’s the same fragrance oil, but blended with different amounts of alcohol and water to create different strengths.
5-15% fragrance oil concentration. Lasts around four to six hours on the skin. Lighter, fresher and more suited to daytime wear. Most classic men’s fragrances live in this category, and it’s usually the cheapest concentration you’ll find of a given fragrance. If you’re wondering “eau de toilette vs eau de parfum, which should I buy first,” an EDT is often the more affordable entry point.
15-20% fragrance oil concentration. Lasts six to eight hours. Richer, deeper and more suited to evenings and cold weather. Most modern women’s fragrances launch at EDP strength, and increasingly modern men’s launches do too. This is the fragrance concentration our team recommends most often as a first proper investment.
20-30% fragrance oil. Lasts eight to twelve hours or more. This is the strongest concentration, applied sparingly to pulse points, and it’s what luxury fragrance houses use for their most expensive expressions. If you’re thinking about the difference between Eau de Toilette and perfume in the traditional sense, this is what “Parfum” actually means. Parfum is not another name for EDT or EDP, it’s the strongest strength above both.
The practical difference between an Eau de Toilette and a Parfum is projection and longevity. An EDT wafts pleasantly and fades by mid-afternoon. A Parfum wears close to the skin, lasts all day and reads as noticeably more considered. Neither is better. They’re built for different purposes.
For a deeper walk-through, our full EDT vs EDP guide explains it beautifully with more examples.

Our fragrance team’s honest advice for a first proper fragrance purchase.
If you want maximum versatility, buy an EDP. An Eau de Parfum will carry you through the day and into the evening, which is exactly what you need at uni when you’re not going home between lectures and pre-drinks.
If you’re on a tight budget, an EDT of a fragrance you love beats an EDP of a fragrance you’re not sure about.Concentration matters, but not more than genuinely loving the scent.
If you want a bottle that lasts all night, look at Parfum or Elixir strength. Perfect for a proper night out, less necessary for everyday wear.
Try before you buy where you can. Ask for a sample in-store, or use our Try It First service. This is genuinely one of the most underrated pieces of student fragrance advice.
You don’t need ten bottles to have a wardrobe. Two or three is enough. Here’s the shape our fragrance team would suggest starting with.
One everyday signature. Usually an EDP. Something you love that works for lectures, coffee dates and casual nights out.
One going-out fragrance. Warmer, richer, slightly more sensual than your everyday. Comes out for dates and nights out. Often an EDP or Parfum.
One optional wildcard. A body mist for casual wear, or an experimental bottle you spotted and had to have. This makes the wardrobe feel like yours.
Total damage with the 15% student discount could easily be under £120 for a proper three-piece starter wardrobe if you shop smart.
Our team’s affordable, student-appropriate picks across gender, all built for the student budget.

The trick to making a small wardrobe feel bigger is layering. If you have two fragrances, you effectively have three combinations. Three fragrances turns into more than you’d expect. Our fragrance team’s quick layering rules for students.
Layer heaviest to lightest. Base scent first, top scent on pulse points.
Layer within families. Two citrus scents work together. Two vanilla scents work together. Combining wildly different types rarely does.
Use a body mist as a layering base. A cheap body mist plus a proper EDP is a genuinely smart layering hack. Body mists layer beautifully under stronger fragrances.
Apply to different pulse points. Don’t rub the two together, let them mingle in the air.
Here’s how to use the student discount properly.
Save it for the bigger purchases. A 15% saving on a £100 fragrance is £15. On a £25 body mist it’s less than £4. If you’re buying multiple things, prioritise the bigger-ticket items for the discount.
Combine with sale prices. The 15% comes off after any sale reductions, so a discounted fragrance on the sale page becomes an even better bargain.
Use it on the newest launches. Freshers is the best time to invest in a proper signature. A brand-new Marc Jacobs or Boss launch, with 15% off, is genuinely one of the best deals in fragrance.
